The advent of the new millennium saw human resources trusted to being the most strategic resource of any organization, and knowledge being the number one competitive edge.

While some organizations treat these as cliché and go no more beyond lip service, others are arduously enhancing the human capital capacity to face the future.

As these organizations embrace this challenge, questions arise as to how to effectively operationalise these. Some of the key questions that need to be answered include:

  • How do we determine the optimum level of human resource required to achieve the organization’s mission and goals?
  • How do we attract the best and be the employer of choice?
  • What is the current human capital competency level?
  • What strategy should we employ to ensure our human capital support organizational change programme?
  • How do we best hone and enhance their capabilities?
  • How do we best reward our performers and address the issue of non-performance?

While this list is not meant to be exhaustive, it spells some of the challenges in making our human capital management a success.
